The large brick mansion was built by James W. Fuller, Sr. in 1865. After Mr. Fuller's death, his widow (Clarissa) sold the property in 1903 to Herman Kostenbader, owner of the Eagle Brewery. He made extensive improvements to the dwelling making it the structure as it appears today. Viewing the mansion from the front, one can see the massive, ornately carved columns supporting the triple dormered roof wrapped with dentil molding. Other features include side porches, flagstone sidewalks, large wooden double doors with beveled glass and brass hardware and several large bay windows, one made entirely of stained glass. The inside features marble trimmed fireplaces, pocket doors, elaborate columns, molding and trim, a carved wood and leather trimmed study, beamed ceiling and a formal staircase. The artesian well out back supplied the water, and a smoke house in the basement took care of curing meats. The structure was converted many years ago into apartments, but remains primarily intact. |
