234 Walnut Street

(John & Heide Brubaker)

The John H. Brubaker Funeral Home at 234 Walnut Street was originally built in about 1865 by the William Laubach Family.  Around 1898, Leonard and H. Madeline Peckitt purchased the building and enlarged and "modernized" it to its Victorian grandeur.  Leonard Peckitt was then the president of the former Crane Iron Works of Catasauqua and one of the founders of the Empire Steel of New York.  The Peckitts moved from the building in the late 1920's and both died in 1952 in their Allentown apartment.

Oliver Burkholder purchased the building and furniture from the Peckitts in 1930 and established his funeral home.  In 1978, John and Heide Brubaker purchased the establishment from the Burkholder family and today it is the John H. Brubaker Funeral Home.

The Peckitt furniture still remains as well as two oil paintings from the 1900's.  One of H. Madeline Peckitt and the other of the Peckitt's St. Bernard dog.  Photographs taken in 1932 of the building's exterior and interior hang together in one of the reception rooms.
