The house is a stone Federal style building built by Frederick Biery in 1826 as a tavern and hotel for travelers. In 1824, Mr. Biery built a private toll bridge over the Lehigh River which crated a need for the hotel and tavern. When the Lehigh Canal was built in 1828, he built the Federal style stone building building next door in 1835 and opened a store to cater to the canal traffic. In 1830, he built the stone Federal style house across the street which is where he lived. The area at Front and Race Streets is the Biery's Port Historic District. In 2002, the house was turned over to HCPA for our headquarters and museum. In May 2003, a designer show house was held at The Biery House. Nine interior decorators and three landscapers showcased their talents. The interior of each room was either hand-painted or stenciled, grain painted or wallpapered in keeping with the period of the house. |
