"George Taylor Mansion"

Lehigh County Historical Society

This wonderful 1768 stone home was constructed in a knoll overlooking the Lehigh River by George Taylor, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.  The home  is a fine example of Georgian architecture.  Both the exterior and interior details of the house resemble some of the notable Old Houses in the Philadelphia area.

Since 1945, the house has belonged to the Lehigh County Historical Society, which has conducted extensive restoration work.  The architecture and furnishings of the first floor rooms are very formal period pieces. On the second floor, the atmosphere is more informal as evidence by the use of simpler textiles.

The house remains much the same as when it was built.  The wing was added at a later date and the stucco on the exterior stone was also an addition of more recent origin.

In 1982, fire destroyed the Wahneta Silk Mill which lay directly in front of the Taylor Mansion.  The Historical Society then purchased the land and extended the lawn, planting additional trees on the grounds.
