Henry Biery, Jr.
Eldest Son of Henry Biery

Henry, son of Henry and Maria Salome (Newhard) Biery, was born at Longswamp on October 1, 1768. He removed to Whitehall Township with his parents in his youth and married March 5, 1799, Maria Catherine Ruch, daughter of Lorenzo Ruch, and sister of Brigadier General Peter Ruch, soldier of the War of 1812. Henry Biery and his younger brother, Frederick Biery, purchased on the 30th of July, 1801, from their kinsman, Jacob Newhard, the old grist mill and saw mill and one hundred acres of land at the confluence of the Catasauqua Creek and the Lehigh River. On January 20, 1806, Henry Biery sold his share in the mill to his brother, and he later removed to Seneca County, New York, where he purchased a large tract of military lands. He soon established a business center, first known as "Beary's Corners," but which subsequently grew into Bearytown. Their grandson, Colonel Charles Biery Gambee, was a soldier during the Civil War. He was Colonel of the 55th Ohio Volunteers, and was killed at the battle of Resaca, Georgia, May 15, 1864, while in command of the brigade repelling the assault of the Confederate forces. Henry Biery died January 8, 1836; and his widow, Catherine (Ruch) Biery passed away on January 22, 1863..
